The Hands On Papermaking Program is owned and administered by Tim Watts Associates

This is a 1-week residential course, based in a UK paper mill, is aimed at all those that wish to gain a practical understanding of the papermaking process.
The course involves a variety of activities which will replicate everyday mill activities in a safer more managable environment.

The activities will involve using equipment such as

  • Lab disintegrators to simulate slushing of pulp
  • Lab beaters to simulate refining of pulp
  • Consistency measurement
  • Schopper Reigler determination
  • Making, pressing and drying handsheets
  • Physical testing such as tensile, burst and tear
  • Additional tests such as smoothness, porosity, gloss, grammage, caliper

  • The course is ideally suited for a range of mill based employees

  • As a foundation unit before attending the MDP programme
  • As a '5th week' after attending the MDP programme to reinforce the lectures
